Photograph by George Steinmetz @geosteinmetz / @thephotosociety It was a bit of a gamble as the weather on the coast was sketchy and I only had enough money for one helicopter flight. But when we broke through the clouds we were right on top of Billy Mitchell Crater Lake, with Mount Bagana, at 1730M, spewing sulphurous gases into the sky. It was an epic moment in 1999, on a six-week trip by private sailboat through the seldom-visited islands north of New Guinea. We were the first private yacht to anchor in Bougainville after a decade of rebellion. To see more from this remote part of the South Pacific go to @geosteinmetz #RingofFire
