New dams and their reservoirs have transformed the Lancang River—the upper Mekong—flooding riverside towns, farms, and roads. Along a reservoir created by the Gongguoqiao dam, goats are herded to pasture on a new elevated highway. National Geographic Magazine writer Michelle Nijhuis and photographer David Guttenfelder traveled the mighty Mekong to explore the ecological and cultural impact of dam construction on the river.
