Photograph by George Steinmetz @geosteinmetz / @thephotosociety We had a hard time getting an armed escort for our first foray into the yardang fields of Iran's Dasht-e Lut basin, as it’s a favorite corridor for heroin smugglers. The penalty for heroin trafficing in Iran is death, so smugglers shoot anyone seen out there on first sight. This labyrinth of wind-eroded ridges creates a near infinite number of discrete corridors for running contraband north from Pakistan and Afghanistan to Turkey. This is the largest #yardang field in the world, measuring 60x120 km, and I was determined to get a good view of it, as it hadn’t been seen from above for 25 years. After this day trip I had to go deeper. To see what happened next go to @geosteinmetz #notadrone #notaspy
