Decken's Sifaka lemur (propithecus verreauxi deckeni) in Tsingi de Bemeraha National Park, Madagascar Photo by @salvarezphoto (Stephen Alvarez) These wonderful, almost magical animals live among the towering limestone pinnacles in Western Madagascar. It’s an extreme world of sharp rock and dense forest. These lemurs glide between those two worlds like ghosts. White flashes jumping off stone, a blur in the canopy forest high above. Always either too far away or too fleeting to capture in an image. After almost 2 months in the park shooting for @natgeo I’d all but given up on photographing them. The last evening of the assignment I had climbed to the top of some of the 300 foot tall towers that make up the national park. The intention was to shoot a night time landscape of this jagged, amazing world. As I was perched on top of a knife edge ridge a family group of lemurs approached me. I put aside the image I had intended to make and began climbing, carefully, along the rocks toward the lemurs. Maybe they just were not used to people out on the rocks near them, maybe they felt secure seeing how awkwardly I moved along the pinnacles, maybe they just wanted their portrait made. Not sure why they did not run away like they normally did. In the last fleeting moments of day light two of the family group posed perfectly for me. Incredible animals in perfect light. #madagascar #lemur #tsingy
