Heavy seasonal rains leave this region lush and fertile but take a devastating toll on its few dirt roads. Driving in Walikale during the rain season is nearly impossible as water-filled craters more than 5-feet-deep are common. Congo's capital city of #Kinshasa--from which the country is administered--is located thousands of kilometers to the southwest. Given the state's weak institutions and the massive size of the country, militia groups flourish in remote Walikale and operate with virtual impunity throughout the territory. #Africa #forrest #jungle #DRC #DRCongo #RDC #roads #development #conflict #rebels #war #northkivu #kivu
