Photograph by George Steinmetz Vasco da Gama first arrived on Mozambique Island in 1498, and the colonial settlement evolved into Fortaleza de São Sebastião which dominates the island's northern end. When the capital was moved to Maputo in the late 19th century, the island became a backwater, and benign neglect ensued. The small white chapel on the left tip is the oldest European buillding in the Southern Hemisphere, from 1522. To see what I found when I crawled inside the chapel, go to @geosteinmetz and scroll down. #notadrone #unpublished #Mozambique #IlhadeMoçambique
