Photo by @petekmuller/@prime_collective for @natgeo. An elderly woman suffering from advanced #polio crawls through the village of #Meliandou in southeastern #Guinea. Meliandou was home to the first #Ebola cases of the West African outbreak. As evidenced in this difficult photograph, the village has no medical infrastructure to speak of. When people started dying of a mysterious illness at the end of 2013, village residents had little idea how to handle it. Sufferers were moved into a "medical facility" which was a small structure with a few beds and no medical supplies to speak of. Lacking protective equipment and testing facilities, the virus spread quickly in Meliandou which, at the time, had approximately 600 residents. Ebola outbreaks often start in remote communities that are ill-equipped to deal with them. #Africa #outbreak #crisis #medical #care #health
