Photo by @petekmuller/@prime_collective. A group of hunters stand for a portrait before a predawn hunt in northeastern DR #Congo. They wear traditional hunting attire, fashioned from the bark of trees and designed to confuse and draw out the monkeys that they target. This type of hunting is done largely for subsistence but also as a means of accessing hard currency for health care, education and other community needs. Hunters are often "patient zero" in outbreaks of zoonotic diseases, such as Ebola, as they have unique encounters with animals in the natural world. See this image and many others in our story on the quest to discover the reservoir host of the #Ebola virus in the July issue of National Geographic Magazine. #Africa #hunting #spillover #zoonosis #virus #copyrighted
