Delta Smelt, California Delta. Photo by @peteressick on assignment for @natgeo. In the four-day spring trawl conducted by the Department of Fish and Wildlife in April 2005, only one adult (shown above) of the endangered fish was caught. Historically, this endemic fish was abundant in the Delta region. In the 1980s, populations declined dramatically from anthropogenic alterations to the smelt's habitat from urbanization, non-native species introductions, water diversions, pollution and loss of tidal wetlands.
