Celebrates World Oceans Day - Photo by @DavidDoubilet A harp seal pup called a #whitecoat nervously waits and watches for its mother to return. Harp seals are born on the sea ice covering the #GulfofStLawrence in late February and nursed for 12 to 15 days before the mother abandons them to mate and migrate. Life on the ice is difficult and early mortality is high. Pup mortality has been extremely high during recent years that saw weak sea ice and early break up. 2015 saw solid ice formation throughout the gulf. Honoring #WorldOceansDay and saluting National Geographic's #PristineSeas project that strives to protect ocean wilderness.
