Photograph by @thomaspeschak African Black Oystercatchers breed during the height of South Africa's summer tourist season. They lay there eggs in a shallow scrape in the sand or on bare rock, habits that make them very vulnerable to human disturbance. A 4x4 beach driving ban in 2002 has had a positive effect on the oystercatcher population but the largest number of birds still thrive on protected offshore seabird islands.
