Photograph by @paulnicklen This is one of my favorite images of all time and the cover of my book, Polar Obsession. A large male polar bear dives under a piece of sea ice and the glassy surface above grabs his reflection. I want my photography to be a combination of art, science and conservation. The art demands that the image is good enough to be published in publications like @natgeo or to be hung on a wall; the science requires that it teaches us something about polar bears like the fact that they are marine mammals and are comfortable swimming in the polar seas. Finally, the conservation message is that without sea ice, polar bears cannot survive. They need ice as a platform in order to hunt their favorite prey-seals. Scientists predict that due to human induced climate change, polar bears could become extinct before the year 2100. And of course, there is always a message of hope. It is not too late to reduce our dependency on oil and coal and turn to cleaner energy.
