Photo by @maggiesteber. Twenty-nine ears ago today, February 7, 1986, Haitians took to the streets in complete joy upon hearing the news that the 30-year Duvalier family dictatorship had fallen. Jean Claude "Baby Doc" Duvalier had fled into the night after massive food riots, taking his dragon lady wife and the national treasury with him. The next morning little by little the streets filled. Rich and poor hugged and danced. They sang and wept at their newfound freedom. The first free and fair elections followed a year later but ended in violence when voters were massacred at polling stations which were burned. One hour after opening the polls were closed and the elections were canceled, smashing Haiti's dream of a true democracy. Elections, coup d'états, natural disasters, and the ever-present corruption have followed but Haitians still hold onto their dreams for a better future for their children and another joyous day like this one when the country for one moment was united into one joyful heart. #haiti #beautifulhaiti #longlivehaiti #womenofvision #wov #maggiesteber @fotokonbit.org @reduxphotos @leicaakademiena
