Photograph by @JohnStanmeyer Erosion on the island of Sumatra, Indonesia. I took this photograph while working on the National Geographic story, Pirates of the Malacca Straits, back in 2006. Chartering a plane in the attempt to present a (hopeful) meaningful image of this historic navigational waterway, the pilot banked the small aircraft inland for a shorter route further north around a crowded airspace. While on the turn, I was aghast at the wrinkles of the earth, wrinkles created not by nature but humanity. I came upon this edit today while going through the archive and felt it was important to remind ourselves what we do the only place we can call home - our planet. All my best, John Stanmeyer #onassignment @NatGeo @NatGeoCreative #deforestation #palmoil #erosion #Indonesia #Sumatra
