An #inmate at s prison in #Siberia. Globally, the success rate for treating Multi-Drug Resistant #Tuberculosis is at about 48%. In the Russian town of Tomsk, the success rate has been approximately 70%, a testament to the town’s pursuit and dedication to treating the disease. Multidrug resistant TB is a disease that most perfectly exemplifies #evolution on the smaller time scale — Though a vaccine for TB was developed in the early 20th century, several drug-resistant strains began to emerge throughout the 1980’s, demonstrating that even in the face of weapons capable of fighting the disease, the variation in the bacteria allowed it to select for variants that were resistant to the treatment. The TB patients of Tomsk are one such example of a population subject to such an unfortunate truth, that the variation inherent in nature allows for such frightening resistance in disease to emerge. @natgeo @instututeartist @thephotosociety @robertclarkphoto
