Photograph by George Steinmetz @geosteinmetz / @thephotosociety #WorldChampion pilot Alain Arnoux uses his motorized paraglider to explore salt domes in a remote part of Iran’s Dasht-e Kavir basin. Salt domes are formed by an upwelling of salt from ancient lake deposits that rise due to the fact that salt is less dense than overlying sediments. Over geologic time the salt rises in plumes, like in a lava-lamp, but as it does so it ruptures and drags overlying sediments, which appear here as a convoluted pattern of stripes. This picture is from 2003 when I obtained a rare flight permit and we were the first foreigners to take aerial photos in Iran since the revolution. I hope that one day Iran will normalize relations with my country so that I can go back and explore this most wonderful land. From #DesertAirBook, a 15 year exploration of the worlds most extreme deserts, in 27 countries plus Antarctica. #notadrone #notaspy To see more photos from Iran visit @geosteinmetz
