I took this image while Brian Knutsen, my childhood friend and ace off-strip pilot were flying around the Arctic in my little ultralight airplane. Spending time with these shy animals has definitely been one of the highlights of my career. It is hard to photograph and fly at the same time which is why Brian would work his mastery from the backseat while I sat in the front seat with the doors off. The plane had inflatable floats and we would land on the sea ice back at camp where we lived in tents for two months. We only had two good days of shooting over a sixty day period.
