Researchers at Louisiana State University test the effects of Phenothrin on a sedated honeybee. Phenothrin is a pesticide used to control mosquitoes but can also harm bees when they are exposed to it. To run the experiment, the researchers put the bees in a paper cup, poke holes in the bottom, then pump CO2 into the cup to put the bees temporarily to sleep. This allows them to expose the bees to a precise dose of the pesticide so they can track its effects when the bees wake up.
