Goma sits along the shores of Lake #Kivu, one of Central Africa's Great Lakes, which spans the borders of #DRC and #Rwanda. #Lake Kivu is vast, fresh water lake with a surface area of 1,040 square miles (2,700 sq km). It contains high levels of methane, carbon dioxide and other gases caused by significant volcanic activity in the area. The volatile chemical dynamics in the lake limits the number of species that can survive in it. I and others often swim in cleaner areas, however, caution is necessary as the possibility of encountering gas clouds carries a risk of asphyxiation. #Africa #bluehour
