Photo by @chamiltonjames (Charlie Hamilton James) European Griffon Vultures fight and feed over the remains of several hundred dead rabbits near Valderrobes, Spain. The location is popular with vultures as it is a 'vulture restaurant' where the birds get fed daily. Some vulture restaurants play a vital role keeping threatened populations of vultures from declining by supplying the birds with safe food. Vultures have declined catastrophically across Africa and Asia in the last decade due to poisoning. European vultures have also suffered due to stricter rules surrounding the disposal of dead livestock - which have historically played a significant role in their diet. The dead rabbits that feed these vultures are the by-product of human consumption - the vultures get the left overs. Vultures will be featured in the October issue of National Geographic Magazine.
