Image by @beverlyjoubert taken at the Maasai Olympics. For centuries the Maasai have practiced a traditional rite of passage to manhood, hunting and killing lions. Now with the number of lions vastly reduced, the Maasai elders came up with a new idea - pitting Maasai against each other in traditional warrior skills in a new form of Olympic Games. These Olympics are now held every two years and the benefits to the communities have been clear. The recognition and lucrative prizes have seen this event grow into what looks to be a great conservation success. It's a win for both Maasai and lions, who are no longer hunted for tradition.
