Photograph by @paulnicklen while #onassignment for @natgeo. There has always been debate whether narwhals are actually feeding on polar cod below the sea ice or if they are just migrating. I have always said that they are doing both. I love the power of a photograph. It may not be scientific proof that they are feeding on cod but it is a pretty darn good indication. No one has recorded them feeding under the ice but I am pretty sure that they use their tasks to stun, wound, disrupt and herd schools of polar cod. Interestingly, this large male skewered a cod through the gills, while, I presume feeding on them. Later this week, I will start posting images of my next favorite polar species.
