Photo by @petekmuller/@prime_collective for @natgeo. A man looks on as women wash clothes in a small river near the village of Meliandou in southeastern #Guinea. At the peak of the dry season, when this picture was made, the rivers are low and the surrounding fields are mostly arid. During the rain season, from May through October, the area receives enough rainfall for successful rice cultivation. In the village of Meliandou, residents currently work to recover from a year of lost crops due to the #Ebola #outbreak. The West Africa epidemic began in the small village in December 2013. As the death toll mounted and rumors swirled around the nature of the then-mysterious virus, residents of Meliandou began to fear venturing into the surrounding fields. They were forced to spend communal funds on burials and traditional healers rather than on farming-related expenses. The community therefore missed the planting season and, as a result, experiences food shortages. #Africa #farming #agriculture #river #washing #recovery
