Photograph by @paulnicklen while on a @sea_legacy expedition with @cristinamittermeier. A baby humpback whale launches into a chin breach. This calf did over 40 of these in a row. Soon, this calf and thousands of humpback whales will travel north to their summer feeding grounds. The mother of this calf has gone for months without eating anything while allowing her calf to drink up 40 gallons of rich milk each day. She will have lost a lot of her body weight and will need to replenish her fat stores throughout the summer months. I shot this image at 1/4000th of a second. In the next frame the whale blew a large volume of water out of its mouth before hitting the water with a dramatic slap.
