Photo by @kitracahana. Pearl Stanley gazes up at Lloyd Boover, who for nine days has been occupying a tree in New Orleans' City Park to protest the construction of a new $24.5 million, PGA-approved golf complex. Hurricane Katrina destroyed the previous courses, and the land was allowed to re-wild, becoming an oasis of wildlife in the center of the city. The new course will be partially funded by FEMA reconstruction funds, yet will be private and for-profit. Proponents of the complex claim that the golf course is a historic feature of New Orleans, while opponents question whether public land should be cordoned off for private enterprise. A Change.org petition to shut down the project has already received over 5,000 signatures. To see a photograph of the protester visit @kitracahana. #wildisfree #neworleans #nola #citypark
