Thousands of Yellow pitcher plant (Sarracenia flava) sprout happily in a recently burned clearing in a Long-Leafed Pine forest in North Carolina. Pitcher plants – a total of 12 recognized species across the eastern seaboard of the US, are one of three principal types of carnivorous plants (pitcher plants, sundews, and the venus fly trap) that can all be found in the remaining bits of Long-Leafed Pine forest along the East Coast of the US. Reduced to 5 % of its original area, this beautiful forest type, along with many of its inhabitants, face serious conservation challenges.
