Photograph by George Steinmetz. Sinkholes pock-mark the emerging shoreline of the Dead Sea near Ein Gedi, Israel. The sinkholes are caused by fresh groundwater dissolving subterranean salt deposits that once formed the bottom of the #DeadSea. When the underlying salt layer is gone, the dry muds cave in and create ponds of differing colors.
