“I now belong to a higher cult of mortals, for I have seen the Albatross” wrote ornithologist Robert Cushman Murphy in 1912, and I know how he felt. To see the Wandering Albatross in its full glory, soaring over South Georgia Island, was a magnificent and moving sight. The Wandering Albatross has the longest wingspan of any bird, reaching up to 3.5 meters, and is the perfect sailing machine, able to fly for thousands of miles on the winds without flapping its wings.
