Photo by Mattias Klum @mattiasklumofficial. You rarely have to travel far to enjoy beauty and the miracles of life! Just down by our house on lake Mälaren a whooper swan made my day. Go to @mattiasklumofficial to see a mute swan photographed in the same location but under different circumstances. Whooper swans (swans in general) are known to mate for life, as you all might know, but this loyalty is surely a strategy for maximising the number of cygnets they can raise. However, changing of mates does occur infrequently and “divorces” have been known. If Mr. or Mrs. Swan dies the survivor usually seeks out a new mate, and the new pair remain devoted. So, if a male loses his mate and pairs with a young female, she joins him on his turf. If he mates with an older female, they go to hers. If a female loses her mate, she remates hastily and usually chooses a younger male. It is always a joy to see and hear the trumpeting sound of these majestic whooper swans in our little bay! #swans #mälaren #uppsala #sweden #art #instagood #conservation @natgeo @thephotosociety
