Photo by @petekmuller. Boys take turns leading informal lessons in the village of Meliandou, in southeastern #Guinea. It was in Meliandou, at the end of 2013, that the first #Ebola cases mysteriously appeared. From this tiny, unsuspecting village, the virus spread throughout neighboring #Liberia and #SierraLeone, leaving death and devastation in its wake. Despite being free of Ebola for nearly one year, residents of Meliandou struggle to fully recuperate. The virus caused many farmers to miss last year's planting season and thus food has become scarce. Community funds were depleted by burials and other costs associated with the outbreak. The situation in Meliandou shows that containing the virus is but the first step in a complex recovery process. #africa #onassignment #epidemic #virus
