photo by @drewtrush The numbers are in. Recent aerial surveys by managers of the National Elk Refuge have tallied 8,390 elk this winter on the National Elk Refuge in Jackson, WY. With a population objective of 5,000, the current population is about 68 percent higher than the objective. The refuge was created in 1912, to help mitigate elk/livestock problems occurring as ranching and development grew in the Tetons. Now, they are the subject of much debate as the spread of Brucellosis is a very real concern for ranchers in the Greater Yellowstone. At 6 miles long, and 10 miles wide the National Elk Refuge is 24,700 acres. In the summer, runoff from the surrounding mountains contribute to the flow in Flat Creek, home to some of the most technically demanding dry fly fishing in the country. In the summer months people travel from around the world fish for it’s famous cutthroat trout. #gye #greateryellowstoneecosystem #flying #elk #nationalelkrefuge @natgeocreative @thephotosociety
