Photograph by @paulnicklen When being chased by Leopard Seals, Emperor Penguins reach such great velocities underwater and consequently great heights when exiting the frigid Ross Sea that it looks like they are truly trying to fly. However, they are just throwing their flippers out for balance. They hit the sea ice with such force that often, these 60 to 90 pound birds knock the air out of themselves. They quickly shake it off and begin their 10 mile hike back to the colony to feed their awaiting chicks.
