Before leaving for an expedition to the Arctic sea ice, scientists are expected to familiarise themselves with the terrain they will be working in. With the temperature at -22 °C (- 7.6°F) a hole is cut through the frozen surface of Advent Fjord in Svalbard, participants jump in, swimming to the other side. They have to retrieve spikes from a pouch on their belt and use these to haul themselves onto the ice. No exception was made for photographer @nickcobbing who is joining the expedition on assignment for @natgeo magazine. Captured by scientist Amelie Meyer from @oceanseaicenpi #NICE2015Arctic
