Photograph by @paulnicklen // A mother polar bear protects her cubs during a blizzard along the shores of Hudson Bay, Manitoba. Did you know that there are places in the Arctic where there are 20 fewer weeks of sea ice each year. It melts earlier and freezes later due to a warming climate. What effects will this have on polar bears that need sea ice in order to hunt? Not only does she need to survive, but in this situation, the mother has to use her valuable energy supplies to nourish her cubs. She is stranded on land with her cubs until the sea ice forms in the late fall. Only then can she go out and catch seals. Top scientists project that polar bears could be gone by the year 2100.
