In a restored salt pond in the northern San Francisco estuary a Great Blue Heron catches a very large striped bass in shallow water. The fish was too big for the heron to swallow whole, so it just put it aside. I assumed that it would later eat a little of the fish at a time, but perhaps it also was preying on a competitor for the smaller fish.
