Photo by @petekmuller/@prime_collective for @natgeo. Tens of thousands of fruit bats fly out from their roosting area in the village of Atienkru, in the West African country of #IvoryCoast. Bats are suspected of playing a role in the so-called spillover of #Ebola virus from the natural world into human and primate populations. What exactly that role is, however, remains to be seen. It has been wrongly asserted in some popular media that bats are in fact the source of the Ebola virus. While Ebola antibodies have been discovered in certain bat species, their status as the reservoir host has not been confirmed. Check out our story on the ongoing search for the reservoir host in this month's issue of National Geographic Magazine. #Africa #bats #virus
