Photo by @mattiasklumofficial for @natgeo. Threatened blue-eyed beauty! The beautiful Galapagos flightless cormorant is an endemic species to Galapagos and is not only the heaviest but also the only cormorant which cannot fly out of 29 species. Please go to @mattiasklumofficial to see a Galapagos sea lion sleeping peacefully on the black lava rocks and many more images from the Galápagos Islands. As the name suggests, these birds cannot fly away and are therefore confined to the lava shoreline and beaches of Isabela and Fernandina where I have found them drying their short wings in the sun. These remarkable cormorants evolved on an island habitat that was free of predators. Having few enemies, and taking its food primarily through diving along the food-rich shorelines, the bird eventually became flightless. The unique flightless cormorant, one of the world's rarest seabirds, is now threatened by the effects of climate change according to a decade-long historical study led by a University of Queensland research team. #climatechange #galapagos #flightless #darwin #cormorant #conservation #ecuador #conservation #iucn #endemic #wwf @natgeo @thephotosociety @mattiasklumcollection @natgeocreative @bigworldsmallplanet
