Photograph by @paulnicklen while on assignment for @natgeo. Aleqatsiaq Peary is the great, great, great Grandson of Robert Peary who supposedly was the first person to arrive at the North Pole in 1909. We just spent two weeks with Aleqatsiaq and his fellow hunters of the far North. One of the great challenges that early explorers faced was that their ships were often crushed by too much sea ice once they were trapped. Now, hunters across the Arctic suffer the opposite fate as sea ice rapidly disappears from these same places. Just like polar bears, Inuit need ice in order to travel and hunt. Please follow me on @paulnicklen as I continue to post images from our recent trip to Qaanaaq in Northwest Greenland.
