Photo by @GerdLudwig. The Salton Sea is in the news again. As farmers let their fields go fallow in order to sell water to nearby towns, there is now limited agricultural runoff feeding into the sea. This decrease in the water supply is exacerbated by the current extreme drought conditions in California, and the Salton Sea is shrinking, leading to more serious concerns about the increasing salinity. Thousands of birds, including Canada geese, American avocets, black-necked stilts, pintails, green-winged teal, brown and white pelicans, and the snow geese shown here, use the Salton Sea for migration or as a wintering site, with tens of thousands of shorebirds visiting in April. I was just back at the Salton Sea this week to scout locations for my upcoming workshop.
