California Sea Lions, Pier 39, San Francisco, CA. Photo by @peteressick on assignment for @natgeo. The sea lions started "hauling out" on Pier 39 in 1990. When a plentiful food supply became available, Pier 39 with its protection from predators became an ideal living situation for the sea lions.
