Through development most have lost the majority of their tidal marshes. San Francisco is unique among the large cities in that there is a major effort underway to restore some of the lost wetlands. One of the shining examples of this restoration is the tidal marsh at Crissy Field. A former U.S. Army airfield the marsh site was used as a dumping ground and then filled and covered over to create an airfield. In 2003, part of the original marsh was restored and opened to the public.
