A Thecla Corobato from #Ecuador The collector of these butterflies did a wonderful job with the layout. The blue one is the the top side and the one behind it is the underside of the same species. This positioning is important because it shows the structural color at play in these insects. Strucural color is caused by wavelength-selective scattering of light by microscopic features, such as those on the scales of some insects. The brilliant blue displayed by some male Morpho butterflies is a classic example of this phenomenon.
