Photo by mattiasklumofficial I captured this image of a spotted hyena chewing on the foot of a hippo in Selous, Tanzania. Go to @mattiasklumofficial to learn more about this cool predator. The spotted hyena is a very successful animal, actually being the most common large carnivore in Africa. Its success is due in part to its opportunistic behaviour and well documented adaptability. The spotted hyena is first and foremost a apex hunter but may also scavenge, with the capacity to eat and digest bone, skin and other animal parts. In fact, the spotted hyena makes the most efficient use of its prey of all African carnivores. It is currently listed as Least Concern by the IUCN due to its widespread range and large numbers estimated between 25,000 and 45,000 individuals. However, this amazing animal is experiencing declines outside of all protected areas due to habitat loss and poaching. #spottedhyena #carnivore #apex #predator #conservation #selous #tanzania #iucn #wwf #nikon #instagood #beauty @natgeo @thephotosociety
