Photograph by @JohnStanmeyer A Bedouin family cooking in their residence, a cave, located in the face of mountain within the historic and culturally important Petra heritage site in southern Jordan. The family has been living for many years in the Umm al Beyar ruins, the last of the Nabatean cave dwellers who for generations have lived in what were tombs, one the waining traditions of the Bedouins who are being pushed into modern housing outside of the UNESCO heritage site. Like countless families before them, Gassemeh has no interest in living anywhere else but within this cave, carved into these mountains 3000 years ago. #onassignment @NatGeo @NatGeoCreative @outofedenwalk #Petra #Jordan #night #mountain #Bedouin @UNESCO
