Twenty-nine years ago today, February 7, 1986, Haitians took to the streets in complete joy upon hearing the news that the 30-year Duvalier dictatorship had fallen as Dictator Jean-Claude "Baby Doc" Duvalier fled into the night with his dragonlady wife and the national treasury. Rich and poor, light and dark, young and old, Haitians filled the streets singing, hugging, weeping at their newfound freedom. The first free and fair elections followed a year later but sadly polling stations and voters were attacked, burned, and massacred, smashing Haiti's hope for a true democracy. Elections, coup d'états, natural disasters, and the ever-present corruption have followed but Haitians still hold onto their dreams for a better future for their children and another joyous day like this one. #haiti #beautifulhaiti #longlivehaiti #maggiesteber #womenofvision #wov @reduxphotos @leicaakademie
